Somatic Fascia Restructuring’s Functional Patterns

There is no wrong movement, there is only lack of awareness.

September 15th – December 22nd

I’ve created this program so that each new course, while keeping the core principals, will explore different modalities and movement traditions which allows us to approach Somatics from different lenses. We are free to explore the body from entirely new and unique perspectives which provides us with the ability to avoid habits and getting stuck or bored. New challenges arise as a result of this approach and we use those challenges as unique opportunities to expand our somatic awareness. This next course we will turn our attention to functional patters we find in the body in relationship to the skeletal, muscular, and fascial systems.

Fascia & Bio-Tensegrity

Fascia is a form of connective tissue that supports the body and facilities movement. It binds the body together in different layers, and then organizes it into a whole, maintaining a consistent form for the structures within the body. It is a very tough and fibrous tissue which surrounds and interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, as well as all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a series of separate coverings, but rather one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part via the fascia.

Bio-Tensegrity is the dynamic aspect of fascia that creates a web of support for structure and movement. It’s the principal of bio-tensegrity that facilitates your body’s ability to move, as well as the ability of your organs to function properly. The fibers of this web line up based on lines of force in the body, meaning that dysfunction and trauma can cause the fibers to become disorganized, which prevents optimal movement and function within any area of your body.
