Introduction to Meditation Course
Our Meditation Training program is part of Vidya’s continuing education series. This course is designed to take students step-by-step through a series of progressive meditation techniques as presented from all three of the Buddhist vehicles. We will cover practices from the three different vehicles (yanas) and learn how they build on one another and are actually interconnected techniques.
Students will also participate in our Wisdom and Compassion series, which introduces participants to the foundations of Buddhist thought and practice. This course is an excellent introduction to the philosophy, history, and practices of the Theravada, Mahayana, and Indo-Tibetan Buddhist meditation traditions.
We will be studying Geshe Tashi Tsering’s text, ‘Relative Truth & Ultimate Truth’. In addition we will compliment this text with weekly meditation practices that also draw upon the Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana philosophy and practices. We will explore both shamatha and vipashyana through the lens of the Buddha’s foundational teachings and then we will introduce the Mahayana concept of bodhicitta into our practice. meditation training
The study of bodhicitta or compassion and wisdom, is a fundamental component of the course work. We will explore the meaning of compassion and its role in yoga. Using the three turnings of the Buddha’s dharma, we will explore the many methods used to cultivate the qualities of compassion and wisdom.
Participants will learn sitting techniques, breathing practices (pranayama), mantras and visualization methods. By the end of the course, all participants will have the tools to maintain a lasting home practice. meditation training
